Read in one sitting while holding my 2 month old with my sweet 4 year old beside me. Uncomfortable to say the least.

This is not a genre I normally read or even like much. But I was riveted. The uncertainty of everything was expertly done. The narrator is unreliable. Even the end, which seems to wrap everything up, is open to interpretation. The reader can walk away believing what they want to believe. I do think it points much more in one direction than another though.

The generational trauma was a brilliant angle. Is Blythe having trouble caring for her own daughter because her mother did, and her mother before her? Obviously. So is that all that's going on? There seems to be more, but we can't be sure because her vision is clouded by her own trauma.

Written in no-nonsense, claustrophobic prose.

Good story, quick read, wanted to keep reading but the end fell flat - a bit predictable. Was hoping for more of a twist.

“These are thoughts I never let leave my lips. These are thoughts most mothers don’t have."

This is a story about a girl who grew up with a mess of a mother. When she grows up to have her own daughter, she can't form the mother-daughter bond and feels like her daughter hates her. Is she doing everything wrong? Is she doomed to fail at motherhood because the women in her family can't seem to get it right? Or is there something wrong with her daughter that no one else seems to see but her?

I
LOVED
THIS
BOOK

Seriously. It's phenomenal. I'm SHOCKED this is a debut, because it's so expertly written. This isn't a fast paced thriller, more of a slow burn suspense. This book left me deeply unsettled. I had this pit of dread and anxiety in my stomach the entire way through.

This book also left me feeling very frustrated and angry on Blythe's behalf toward the people in her life. Especially her piece of shit husband. Everything he did after like the first 10% left me FUMING. Like when the daughter says she hates her mom or wants her to die and he doesn't discipline her or even defend Blythe. And how he blamed everything wrong on her being a bad mom. Not to mention other things I can't say for the sake of spoilers. God I really hate that man. I wanted so bad for Blythe to tear into him and let him have it just once.

By the end of this book I had so much pent up anxiety, suspense, and frustration. When I finally got to the last page, it was the BIGGEST wave of satisfaction. The ending was really abrupt, but after thinking on it for a while I'm really happy with the way the author decided to end this. I love that the writing had me so emotional and immersed the end was that much more rewarding.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't have minded an extra chapter wherein everyone who ever doubted Blythe realized she was right the entire time. I wanted Blythe to be vindicated by the end of this book SO BAD and we never got to see it with the abrupt ending.

can we start by saying that i definitely have a fear now that my child potentially shows signs of being a future serial killer?!

this book starts off strong giving us a future pov of our mc (blythe) and the foreshadowing of the tragic events of the past. this book from the very beginning gave me verity, the perfect child and the good son vibes! while reading, i was always at the edge of my seat wanting to read the next chapter immediately after finishing one. i also like how short the chapters were, it really made me want to read more since i read one super fast hehehe...

anyways back to the book, even though i knew in my gut something bad was going to happen--still while reading some of the sequences-- my jaw dropped to the ground and i audibly gasped.

this shit really gives you a whole new perspective on motherhood and childhood trauma, and how it affects how parents raised and treat their children on the long run. before this book, I am terrified at the thought of being a mother but now after reading this, it made it worse and to top it all off--imagine having a child who doesn't love you and complete sociopath...

blythe truly deserves better, violet is a future serial killer and fox can suck ass for being a shit husband.

A quick read that was more psychological than thriller. Told from the perspective of a woman trying to understand the relationship she has with her daughter that no one else wants to believe.
