Short thoughts on bookcrossing website by me in 2006... I got this second hand from a charity shop, so really I'm part way on the book's ownership story.
I love eccentric stories, and this one is a wonderful tale from Australia. It's about a man obsessed with Eucalyptus trees, who has all the hundreds of varieties growing on his property. He offers the hand of his daughter to the man who can correctly name every tree...
It has a real sense of modern day fairystory to it.

I read this for a failed reading group of fellow publishing people. Great find!
ignorantly misogynistic writing and boring - boring on a topic that I normally find incredibly interesting; trees and euc species
Ellen is the beautiful daughter or Holland, who has an unparalleled collection of eucalyptus trees. He decides that the man who can correctly name all the trees will get to marry her. Several try and fail. There are about 500 different trees. One man, Mr. Cave, looks like he'll do it. Then a stranger comes and begins telling Ellen stories--stories connected to the trees. When she thinks she has lost him, Ellen falls into a waking sleep--rousing her depends on captivating her with a story. No one can, and even though Cave named all the trees, he may still lose. Turns out the stranger had already named the trees--when he delivered the aluminum name plates.
The plot was so promising~ but the way the writer wrote it, quickly made me become uninterested in it!~ Not only was it not very reader friendly, but quite presumptuous.

i feel bad rating this so low but i didn’t get it and it was boring to me-i basically speed read through the second half and i think if i understood it maybe i would’ve liked it more-idk not for me probably should’ve abandoned it (2.5 ⭐️)
