I don't really know what to say about this book. It certainly didn't meet my expectations. It felt like a book for vegetarians and vegans (aside from the animal death and cruelty), trying to point out what humans put animals through when they go to slaughter and are used for lab testing. That I could've got behind as it would've been thought provoking, and at times, it is, but it eventually became a sadist novel, with no real point to it. The ending felt rushed and was just stupid imo. The reviews make out it's some massive ending but it wasn't worth it for me.
Some characters, like Mari and Nelida, acted almost childishly and said some stupid things in the context they were in. The dialogue in general wasn't particularly strong.
There's quite a gross sex scene in it that almost made me quit reading. It ultimately became one of those scenes just thrown in for effect as the character the protagonist sleeps with almost immediately disappears from the storyline afterwards.
The protagonist isn't likeable, and he ultimately
cheats twice on his wife, who verrryyy rapidly is okay with it because now they have a baby together? 🙃

Don't feel like you're missing out if you don't read this book, you're probably better off not reading it anyway.

When you understand all the themes and think it was put together well but still don’t like the book 😭

I think it wanted to say a lot but turned out a bit flat, relying so much on shock and gore (much more gore than necessary). I really appreciate how it talked about how words we use affect our reality and what we believe in but it was such a small portion of the book, I wish more attention was put into exploring that instead of pages and pages of torture.

I understand that it’s translated to English from Spanish. Maybe the translator didn’t do a very good job and that’s why it’s so bad. But maybe they did and the book is just poorly written.
The amount of plot holes in this book is insane. Every single chapter has at least one plot hole.
The book shifts from scene to scene without warning. Leaving the previous scene unfinished.
This had the potential to be a good book, but it was poorly written and is therefore lack luster.

The most horrifying book I've ever read. Tender is the Flesh is an inverted, mirror-world cousin to the French film Martyrs. Every time I thought, "That's the worst thing so far," I was wrong. It got worse over and over again. This is not somewhere on a scale from 1-10, where 1 is a scary story and 10 is gorey horror; Tender is nestled deep within a hellish scale all its own, with inhuman units of measure going in more than two directions.

Bazterrica reaches out and scars you - each page a deeper, sharper papercut. Chapter 4 in Part II is pure literary art, and is all the more impressive because the language is simple. You won't find grandiose vocabulary or winding plush prose; this book is as direct and visceral as the stunning club. Cheers to the translator in the version I read, Sarah Moses, who is owed some of this praise.

I was excited to read this book because of the good reviews but when I actually read it, I got bored quickly. The plot was disturbing which usually, I like. This plot was disturbing in a way that seemed unnecessary. The book was honestly too fast-paced and I struggled to finish it because I had lost interest. The idea had potential but the execution was poorly done.

It's fine. I wish the cannibalism hadn't been in the description and had been introduced further into the book. It could definitely use some more world building. It's a quick, but not an unputdownable read. Although the subject matter is disturbing I would not call this something you're going to struggle to get through. It's a great look into how easily we disregard others wellbeing out of selfishness.
