While the content may be disturbing for some, this is not my first rodeo with these topics and my reasons for not finishing the book stem more from the fact that whatever point the author is trying to make is not terribly groundbreaking. Most of the messages that I felt were trying to be conveyed have been topics of conversation for years (yes human can be unbearably cruel, especially to other humans. Yes, the meat industry is horrific and we often bend over backwards to make arbitrary justifications so the public can remain comfortably blind to the gruesome nature of the industry. Yes even those we believe to be good and have “correct viewpoints” are capable of acting in opposition to those views for their own comfort/desires.) I don’t feel this book added any new dimensions to these conversations and instead gave more of a 101 introduction to these concepts, but the end result made me feel like the content had no deeper purpose than to shock and horrify readers. 

TLDR if you’re already passingly familiar with humanity’s potential for cruelty, justification of said cruelty, and ability to be stunningly hypocritical in order to remain comfortable then there’s no real reason to read this book

Nauseating in the best way. This would’ve been an easy book to write poorly, to lean into a tirade, to take away the complexity of meaning in. Augustina Bazterrica avoided practically every trap door, and I’m very impressed.

I was horrified by this book, but it was such an incredible read, and I loved it for book club especially because there are so many layers of meaning in every choice made. I especially enjoyed (a word that feels strange to use) the way that the book ended, which caught me entirely off guard. I won’t say more, but I was shell shocked when this book ended and it hadn’t gone the way I anticipated.

This book *did* make me happy to be vegetarian while reading it, that’s for sure. Lastly, the content warnings here are about to be next level.

A good book in terms of writing about complex themes and topics as well incorporating depth and layers in the text. Personally, I think certain sections could be improved by giving us more context or background information but overall an excellent read that will haunt you for weeks!

A lot of the content is disturbing but it’s not to challenge readers on how much gore we can handle but rather the importance of our reactions and how we handle the topics. This book is not just a commentary on the food industry but rather capitalism. I suggest looking into the author’s background to gain further context for the commentary.

This book was horrific and disgusting. I kinda wish I didn’t read it, but I also couldn’t stop. I will never read it again. The societal commentary on language, media, governments, and animal abuse are there but woven into such a gruesome story that it’s hard to reflect on the messages without wanting to vomit. Idk why I read this or why I finished it. I’m scarred for life. It has basically every trigger warning ever. I do not recommend this to a friend.

I’m at a loss for words. The escalating brutality was intense, and I found myself needing breaks to process it all.

I highly recommend checking the trigger warnings before diving in. The book doesn’t hold back on depicting a world where this is the norm. However, it’s exceptionally well written, offering rich character and world-building in very few pages.
