At first I found this a little hard to get into. The deliberate degradation of language took a few chapters to get used to but the storyline was so compelling I was quickly swept away by the narrative.

Koli is an exciting, utterly human protagonist navigating a world so removed from the Earth we know. Set hundreds or maybe thousands of years from now, society has been whittled down to small villages fighting from survival while nature slowly attempts to encroach, destroy and consume the last humans left. Technology is scarce and highly prized and the past is shrouded in mystery.

Narrated by our protagonist, this feels unique if not utterly alien to the reader. With so many dangers, Koli's curious spirit and honesty shines like a beacon in this dark world.

I can't wait for the next two installments.

A bit of a slow start to a series that proves to be quite engaging

I went into this thinking it was a fantasy novel but I was delighted to learn it is a very dystopian sci-fi. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and am really glad I own the rest of the series already.

Intriguing and somewhat disturbing dystopian novel about what would happen if tech destroyed nature the the extent that it become a killer. Also a good look on how small communities can become cults when separated from the rest of reality whether that be only giving one family "magical" gifts or a following a mad man. Koli can be a bit blockheaded sometimes but I think he will continue to grow as this series does. The book really could have done without the weird dialect but I do understand the artistic choice.
