As always, Maggie Nelson's insight and critical patience is unparalleled. She can write, that's for sure. But whereas I'm usually rating her books at 4.5 to 5 stars, I think parts of this one didn't totally align with the full criticism I'd want to see covered. I think the section on #MeToo, consent, and power dynamics made me somewhat uncomfortable in ways I'm still struggling to parse apart. Obviously parts are uncomfortable, and good cultural criticism often does make folks uncomfortable. But I think Nelson equivocates a bit too much, or spends a lot of time on some issues and much less time on other issues, in a particular way that's a different kind of uncomfortable. I also feel like a ton of the section on climate disaster, and really a lot of the content about care and interdependence overall, could've benefitted from more overt references to disability theory and communities. This was still strong and pretty memorable, so I am sure I will reread, but I wanted a little more.
