talia NEEDS to write more YA because this was amazing!!! i love the brown sisters trilogy, so i didn't doubt i would like this. i loved the representation sooo much - plus size fmc, OCD/mental illness rep, Black romance!!! just so good. also i'm a friends-to-lover WHORE and i ate that part up. the addition of them being friends-to-strangers then lovers was just *chef's kiss* i will say it was missing something that didn't make a 5 star read for me - idk what it was but i still had a great time reading!

⚠️: abandonment, mental illness (OCD), injury/injury detail, medical content, panic attacks/disorders, bullying, alcohol, infidelity (not mcs)

I love Talia Hibbert’s writing so much and it lends itself immensely to a witty but hard-hitting YA novel. I particularly loved how she handled OCD/mental illness in this novel - it’s just something that happens to be a part of the character but does not define him. It was also really heartwarming to see how the character’s friends were so supportive of mental health as well. Can’t wait for more YA books written by Talia Hibbert!

This isn't my favourite book from Talia Hibbert, but it's still a cute story with likeable characters. This being said, the miscommunications between Brad and Celine got old really quickly and felt pretty dragged out. It felt like they would be honest with each other and then would spend the next few chapters determinedly undoing that honesty.

This isn't a book I would have initially picked up, but it was chosen as the February book for the romance book club I'm a part of, hence the purchase and read. Although I enjoyed this read, I had quite a few issues that made me not rate it exceptionally high.

On the matter of the writing of the characters, I absolutely loved Bradley (I refuse to shorten it to Brad, I hate Brads), and his POVs were much more enjoyable to read. His struggles made sense, most likely because much of him is based on the author, including his OCD, and his arc felt the most complete. His side of the fight was much more believable and understandable. I do wish his bisexuality had been written in a little better since it's mentioned once awkwardly and then not again for the rest of the book. Celine made me feel very complicated as I understand some of her struggles as I, too, don't have an active dad and had a mom who had to compensate, but she felt very flat at many points like she didn't have much more than anger towards her dad and sympathy towards her mom going for her. She also had a very "not like other girls" personality that had her saying bad things about other women for liking stereotypically girly things. That is never enjoyable to read about a protagonist. Most of the side characters were pretty one-dimensional, but this book flew by, so there needed to be more room for actual character development; it felt like it relied too much on telling, not showing their non-romantic relationships because of the speed.

On the plot, I quite liked their romance, even for my issues with Celine. I like good childhood friends to enemies to lovers plot, which was fun to read. The actual adventuring part of the plot was also quite fun, but it felt too fast, like much of the book did.

I also struggled with Celine's mom's situation; it often took me out of the book. Celine makes it seem like her mother's pride was admirable, but I highly disagree, seeing its impact on their family. The book tells us that her mom chose not to seek the necessary child support (or what they call it in England) and to work herself to the bone and make it harder on her and her children. This is not admirable to me, she chose her children's suffering over getting over her pride, and she made a selfish choice to me. This, coupled with the fact that there isn't a resolution in the storyline with her dad, made that aspect of the book unenjoyable.

I plan to read Hibbert's other books this year as I liked some aspects of this, so I may like those better. I also really like the Content Warnings at the beginning and the England slang definitions, as I definitely would have been a little lost without them.
