probably not the best book if you're in a place where you can't think about large scale disasters, but a solid read nonetheless. i do wish some of the characters had more of an arc and i also wish henry wasn't a character at all, but i think especially if you're from or have spent significant time in california, this will be a heavy but fulfilling read for you.

This is probably the best book I’ve read this year and it was written four years ago. It was so thought provoking and real. I could not set it down. The writing style is perfect. If you love a good thriller, found family, morally grey characters, and apocalypse stories then you have to read this!

I hated this book. It's the "humans are the real monsters" trope that's all to prevalent in all apocalypse style media. It was too unrealistic for the amount of realism they tried to put into it. The two main male characters were sexist pigs and the one relatively decent group of people was not enough community bonding and true human spirit for me to get over the rest. The ending is semi-satisfactory, at least.
