Tina Knowles knows how to tell a good story. Her journey to being a matriarch begins in Louisiana where we begin to understand the distinct familial culture that shaped her. She traced her matriarchal lineage back to her enslaved ancestors and we see how knowing and hearing those stories affected her.
It’s important to realize that this is a story of how and why she became the family matriarch— much more than being Solange and Beyoncé‘s mother. We learn how and why Tina renamed and claimed herself. We understand how she created a family that was more expensive than the two children she gave birth to we get a clear view of her values and the values of the larger family.
Tina spends a lot of time telling the story of her marriage to Matthew Knowles, the father of Solange and Beyoncé. She spends less time on her 10 year marriage to Richard. That makes sense to me since her relationship with him was less central to the story of how she Created her role as matriarch. I enjoyed the memoir and felt that it went beyond gossipy stories about Beyoncé. For this, I was grateful.

This book was such a well written memoir, PERFECTLY calculated suspense leading you to want to dive into the next chapter to discover what would come of the crumbs she gives in the beginning chapters. You know enough of her life to understand a few outcomes — which results into you wanting read the middle chapters. Relatable Bombshells and rawness drafts from her relationship with Matthew that all women, especially black women, can identify with, which is — Being a breadwinner and taking on the torch at unexpected times to carry the family forward. She displays what it truly means to be a Matriarch. My only minus for this book was I wanted to know more about her journey of being alone and embracing solitude, she accredits her daughters a TON in this book, sharing the accomplishments of Beyoncé, Solange, and Kelly — rightfully so as a lioness protecting, acknowledging, and celebrating her tribe, but so much information wasn’t necessary because she gave us a generous amount of herself, she shined so bright I didn’t need so much of there’s, But that was just me. I find myself skipping past a lot of that information through reading. The ending lacked compared to the beginning which is understandable because her story is still being written but overall it was beyond insightful, emotional (I cried so much), HILARIOUS, relatable, and inspiring!! An amazing and addictive read!
