Oh, boy. “Disciple”, third in the “Fushigi Yugi” series, is something that was conceptually fine, but I really didn’t like in practice. Tamahome’s backstory comes out in this volume and it is very classic, basic and not particularly good or bad. We mostly focus on finding Yui, Miaka’s friend, who has entered the book and been lost for multiple months. While Yui’s plot is fine in concept, I really hated how it played out and what motives we get. I’ll continue the series for another volume or so, but I really was turned off by where Watase took Yui and how she go there.

Yay! The drama is starting to get serious and we finally get some of Tamahome's background! Hooray! I knew there had to be a reason for him being so miserly!

What happened with Yue was intense though! The story suddenly got much darker than I had anticipated, although I like that, it made the series much more mature.

I really wanted to give this volume 4 and 1/2 stars because I feel like this volume really upped the anti and is really drawing me in. The next volume will most likely be getting 5 stars!

I can understand where Yui is coming from. So far, the story is fine except for all the touchy stuff between Miaka and Tamahome. There is such a thing as too much hugging.

We finally meet Chichiri and Nakago in this volume. We also learn that there is a new Seiryu no Miko and the gang are being hunted down by men from Kutou. More shenanigans!

- I can't believe Tamahome just left Miaka in the forest so he could get candies from her bag back in the house. Why not just carry her with him? Huge plothole that I didn't even care to analyze back in the day.

Spoiler- Miaka and Tamahome finally kiss!! AAAHHHH!! ♥

The twists! This series got a lot more serious than I expected, not to say it lost it's strange, yet charming, comedic timing though.

We finally find Yui... just for everything to sour immediately. Honestly, if Yui and Miaka were such great friends, you'd think they'd at least try to talk everything out beforehand. I guess it wouldn't be as dramatic that way though haha.

Tamahome has grown on me exponentially this volume. He's actually really sweet and endearing. I still think Hotohori is the hottest guy established so far though, but that's probably just my personal bias for long haired bishies shining through lmao

This series is holding strong at 4 stars for me. I love that each of the Suzaku warriors has their own unique personality. And the addition of the Seriyu Priestess adds a whole new complexity to the storyline. I also like that this doesn’t turn into s typical harem story where every man is lusting after the same woman. There are relationship nuisances that add so much to the overall story. Can’t wait to continue the story in volume 4!

Things that made me cringe and/or eye roll:
-the picture of Yui with long hair and the caption "she cut it off because she was getting too much attention from boys."
-Chichiri's comment to Nuriko about being a cross-dresser
-Tamahome. Miaka. TAMAHOME! MIAKA! engrained in my soul for all of time
-Miaka for not just explaining why she was gone three months and actually talking to Yui
-Yui in general this collection. Like OMG, I know bad stuff happened to you, but you are a shitty friend that lets a stupid boy (character in a book!) destroy a 10-year friendship!
-And all the puns and jokes that are lost in the translation
