I loved the sense of family in this romance. All the Patels rallied behind Layla and then Sam. I loved Layla's father and his endless support. The emotional intensity of grieving her lost brother -- plus the strife that comes from wanting to follow his wishes for the restaurant. I loved that the dead brother was a character, but never got in between Layla and her happiness. She grieved him, but she was able to continue living.
Then Sam's story with his sister, and his never-ending goal of revenge - which ultimately got in the way of his own happiness. How he was able to shift his self-blame, reunite with his family, and forgive himself and his parents. Blah blah blah!
I loved Layla and Sam together, too! They were very sweet. The narrator was lovely. Overall, this romance was very lovely!

The characters feel too superficial, nothing ever bothers them including humiliating the other in a public space.
Not to mention that there a dozen stereotypical tropes of “desi” fitted into the prose, it got annoying really fast.

Great chemistry between the leads but he failed her three times and that third act breakup was irredeemable. She never should have gone back to him and it made no sense that he didn’t value her at that point in the story. Fun side characters but horrible men.
As someone who read this series backwards, her last book is the best out of the series
I wanted to love this book but I just hated the love interest and despite there being a few cute scenes, overall I couldn’t get on board unfortunately.

The fact that it took me almost 5 months to completely get through this shows how mixed-up I felt about this book. I was intrigued by the premise then annoyed by the characters. Nearly every man in this book is a caricature. The “drama” in the story ping pongs back and forth so often it becomes like a fly that keeps buzzing in your ear and you can’t quite swat it away. Enough is enough, Sara Desai. Get to the point (and not with a tattooed ex-con in the Tenderloin — way too cliche). The audiobook narrator also irritated me with her too-cool-for-school vocal tone. But somehow the last chapter really got me — yes, I made it to the end — and not just because I’m a San Francisco Giants fan. Cute enough for that third star, though I admit I’m being generous.
