dark emotional mysterious tense

Renee carries this book, Bosch and Maddie appear as side characters. I don't love Renee on her own--she's impatient and often resorts to lying to make her path easier in the department. She seems to justify this because sexism stacks the system against her.
My memory is that Bosch had some rough edges when he was younger too. Maybe Renee will get wiser and more likeable over time.

Another gem from Connelly. Balancing up-to-date forensic procedures, basic investigative processes and a deep understanding of the complex political nature of big city policing as part of a outstanding mystery story. Characters are fleshed out showing the flaws as well as the virtues.

Ballard and Bosch (but this time mostly Maddie Bosch not Harry) take on the world and win. Great cases, lots of suspense and as always lots going on.

Ballard’s personality and I don’t mix. I felt like she was a complete asshole to Hatteras and treated her in a demeaning and passive aggressive way. I also hated the entire premise of this book. It’s trying too hard to make Ballard into Bosch and adding another Bosch to keep the name in there
