LAPD Detective Renee Ballard runs the Open Unsolved Unit, as the only and primary badge, along with a group of volunteers. A typical morning for her starts at the beach, catching a few waves but on this day, her vehicle is broken into and her badge, keycard and gun have been stolen. The team must dig through deep secrets and trauma to determine the biological father, and find, and name the Pillow Case Rapist and bring justice for the victims.
Maddie Bosch - Harry Bosch’s daughter- is brought onto the team, and proves her worth when she solves the Black Dalia case which is decades old, with the help of new technology, and photos found in an old storage unit.
With several high stakes cases on the go, and one with a potentially live suspect, Renee must do what she can to bring justice even if it means repercussions for herself.

I liked that Maddie Bosch is becoming more of a central character, although I miss having more of Harry. Ballard is growing on me. I didn’t see one major plot development coming towards the end.
