As always, a Michael McConnelly book rips along, carrying me with it. Just what I needed as a respite from busy, heavier stuff. This one follows three cases at once, and kept me on my toes following all the threads, but Renee had it all in hand so I just kept reading.
Renee Ballard is a good woman, a risk-taker, a quick thinker, a loyal boss and friend. I'd like her on the job when something bad happened to me. Complex and dealing with her issues, yes, but her "flaws" are not the main focus here; her growth in confidence, scope, responsibility and vision are the main focus. And seeing her begin to mentor her "volunteers" is fun.

The Waiting - Prequel to our Deep Dive Podcast…
This was a good read but nothing particularly new or groundbreaking for Michael Connelly. If you're a fan of the Bosch/Ballard universe, you'll appreciate the continuation of their stories. Ballard's investigation into a theft at a surf break becomes intertwined with a larger, more dangerous case involving domestic terrorism, as she tracks down her stolen badge. Fans of Bosch will be pleased to see him playing a key role, aiding Ballard in her pursuit of justice.
- The pacing is classic Connelly, keeping you engaged with twists and turns throughout.
- Ballard continues to be a compelling character, grappling with personal struggles while dedicating herself to her work.
- The plot feels familiar at times, echoing themes and elements from previous Connelly novels.
Overall, "The Waiting" is an enjoyable thriller, but don't expect it to be the most memorable or unique addition to Connelly's impressive body of work.

*5 Stars* *
I absolutely devoured this book - I love this world that Michael Connelly has created, and I've said it before, and I'll say it again - he's my favourite crime writer. This latest book in the Ballard/Bosch universe gives us plenty - it's got Ballard doing things her own way and digging down, its got Harry in there and we got Maddie too which was fantastic.
I love how all 3 characters really bring something to the story, and even some of the rest of the Open Unsolved team too. A few things going on simultaneously in this, but Connelly has it all play out well and in a way that makes sense. I really liked how everything played out (except of course one sad thing that happens) and I'm so so keen to read more of this world. Highly recommend.
