A lot of great writing in here but in my opinion the concept/setup never quite paid off.

It was very different. I enjoyed it because of the form of writing. It was kind of hard to follow, because the timelines go back and forth. And I feel a little gypped because there really wasn't any kind of resolution. It felt like I had come in in the middle of a story and then left early.
This book is very hard to describe. Very interesting and leery set up with the fall of video stores in the early 2000s in the Midwest. This brought me back to my early childhood in a strange and creepy way. While I loved what the author did to build suspense throughout and set up an extremely creepy atmosphere, the book lacked plot and direction and settled on vibes. Read if you are looking for something experimental and don’t mind being very confused and unsettled.

Some spooky stuff is going on to video store tapes for the first 1/3 and nothing else happens for the rest of the book. It left me frustrated in a way that fans of this book will disregard as just "not getting it" but in actuality it's just frustrating.
This book was recommended to me by my wife. The premise sounded good. The story is a case of WTF. I had no idea what was going on from part to part. The characters were all over the map. The change in their motivations is never explained. There is a bit of explanation in the last paragraph (I listened to the audiobook, so exact placement is a guess), but it feels like a “oh, this was the point” tacked on for those readers like me who didn’t understand. I still don’t understand.
