I feel like the ideal customer for this book is a completist Mountain Goats fan who will finish their application for the MFA at the Iowa Writer's Workshop as soon as they finish bingewatching "The Leftovers."
If that sounds like you, you'll probably love the shit out of this.

This has a sense of dread and unknown just running through it, a good creepy late summer, early fall book.

Terribly confusing, but well-written all around. Darnielle's writing is masterfully brilliant in painting terrifying images on the eyelids of the reader as they drift off to sleep every night, however those nightmares, unfortunately, won't linger due to the fact that the plot and synopsis are so convoluted and warped in mystery that they're almost impossible to fully understand. I found myself re-reading pages up to three to four times, simply because I didn't understand what was happening. Even after the ending, I still had to sit there for a couple minutes contemplating what everything meant. Still don't really get it, which is more of a con than a pro, but still an all-around decent read.
Darnielle’s second novel starts off with a Stephen King-inflected premise and a great control of mood, before it kinda dissolves near the end, and ends up not really amounting to much.

A divisive read, for sure, but requires such introspection and thought as to be thoroughly rewarding.
Good read
This book is a decent enough read. Creepy since I'm familiar with the places in Iowa described. It also put me to sleep multiple times. The premise was so interesting! And then I took so long to read it, I lost the plot.
