A kind-of surreal and strange story. Also reminds me of an indie horror game I saw once about a serial killer splicing video footage onto the tapes in a video rental store, or something like that. I can only guess some third, older thing inspired both of these.

I think it's easy to be frustrated or disappointed with this book: the marketing, the pacing, the lack of urgency and complete disregard of contemporary conventions. The narrative seems to toy with this deliberately while holding a mirror up to the reader after coming full circle by the end--we are the future family, trying to make sense of something with limited, distant context, demanding closure or explanation in a quickly digestible way. But it isn't neat or tidy much as life often isn't, and it's up to us to derive meaning.
But while I can appreciate it from a craft perspective, it's not the type of book I'd ever see myself recommending, and one I'll likely remember vaguely as that one experimental fever dream that somehow stretched 200 pages into eternity.

Not sure what to make of this. Felt hazy. More concerned with people and places than something approaching a plot. Not bad, less frustrating than Devil House, but it seems John is obsessed, in his fiction at least, with remembering, witnessing, the taking down of minor history. There are worse obsessions, but it doesn’t speak to me much right now. I would like to see what he comes up with on different themes. Let himself get a little loosey-goosey.
Damn, this is more like a 2.5.
The premise was so cool and the audio had original music. The setting and Part 2 made this worth finishing. But Part 1 and the final Part were lost in dissociated writing, slow plot movement and confusion in who/what was going on.
Can't recommend this one but if you do the audiobook is only 6hrs. Booktok fails again.
