Meyer is one of my fave authors so I’d hoped I’d love this, but I didn’t. It felt like the story took a while to get going yet the characters were progressing so quickly into relationships, even when they had met on 2 days out of 2 months.
The last 100 pages or so wee quite enjoyable in itself, quick and constantly leaving me wanting to know more. But the rest? I’m not quite sure.
No spoilers, but it has one of the tropes I dislike near the end so maybe perhaps that’s why I didn’t enjoy it as much as I wanted to.
I have mixed feelings about this one, but I do think I’ll buy the sequel to see what happens.
Moderate: Animal cruelty, Child death, and Injury/Injury detail

Serilda is such a boring, unlikable main character. I didn't care about her at all as she was a whining self-sabotaging character. She chooses to lie all the time and takes pleasure in doing so but then she gets herself in bad situations and complains how no one trusts her. Plus some things she lies about just cause me to roll my eyes because it's ridiculous she would even lie about them. Her actions often annoyed me and had me not caring about her at all.
The romance was very boring. Insta love often annoys me especially. Then unnecessary unplanned pregnancy is literally the worst romance trope ever. But especially the fact that it was unplanned TEENAGE pregnancy. gross.
Also this book dragged so much. It could have been half as long because there were so many unnecessary scenes. The fact that it's going to have a sequel is ridiculous.

i feel like the idea of this book is better than the story told. The pacing was confusing. I thought the story would be wrapped up by the end of the book and was really surprised once I got to the end. I'm curious how the second and third books are going to go. I'm not certain there is enough story for them.
On the positive side, I really liked the mythology incorporated. Meyers really did a good job on her research. It's refreshing to read a story and see mythological creatures I haven't seen before.
