Marissa Meyer still doin' this thing in her books, I believe I've discussed it in other reviews but, gorl really has like 1-3 really good ideas and filling in the plot around those ideas is always incredibly slow and gets rather dull at times. But then when we get to a well-blocked idea, the writing gets exciting, vibrant and luscious again.
The story itself was entertaining enough, seeing how the tale of Rumpelstiltskin could play out in a YA Fantasy Romance was fun. I think the loose adaptation and playing into German folklore was great, honestly. But the dull parts are so dull, its hard to say I truly enjoyed reading this book. Regardless, I'll still read Cursed because I read every Marissa Meyer book now I guess, lol.

I went so back and forth with this book. There are parts that I really enjoyed and I will definitely read the second one. But at times it felt like this was dragging on, and I don’t particularly love any of the characters. I also found it at times just utterly depressing for no reason, like things being sad not for the plot but just to be sad.

This book truly is a Rumpelstiltskin retelling, with all of the turning straw into gold gimics. As always, Marissa Meyer puts a great twist to the original fairy tales, this time with the chemistry between Gild, the castle poltergeist, and Serilda, the protagonist. Along with the villainous Erlking, the book is full of the dark and twisted stories found in the original Grimm fairy tale.

While the book was readable, and left on a great page turner for the sequel, it was very drawn out to be 500 pages. There was a lot of fluff in the book, while medium to fast paced, that was unnecessary. I also can’t imagine how this is still ya due to how gruesome some of the descriptions are. That being said, I’m still looking forward to reading the next book in the future, maybe.

It’s tricky because I believe Marissa Meyer is a master at her craft. This was genius storytelling, in my opinion, but I also don’t like scary things and I would classify this book as horror. Sooo I’m amazed by the storytelling and horrified by the contents.
