Eventually I was going to read more crime fiction, and I figured why not start with the most legendary crime fiction writer ever.

Agatha Christie was clearly very good at what she did: writing effective, tense, thrilling crime dramas. For someone like me who has actually studied modern criminal investigation techniques in my education, it was really fun to see a semi-authentic look at what a detective would need to do back in the 1930s. As such, the reader will come across some very dated but probably period accurate attitudes, investigation techniques, and interrogation methods, as well as the use of reasoning and deduction to come at the truth rather than the use of technology, which frankly remained in a rather primitive state for criminal justice until the revolution of DNA decades later.

Christie is great at weaving a compelling criminal case through a very large cast of notable characters. It was really fun to witness Hercule Poirot work through problems and interact with such cast. If this is the quality of writing I can expect in the rest of Christie's books, then I will absolutely be looking forward to going through more of her bibliography.

Another point in favor to Christie is that this book was effective despite the fact that I knew the ending due to my having watched the modern movie starring Kenneth Branaugh, which was fine, but as usual the book was the more effective storytelling medium. I have also watched the Death on the Nile movie and remember enjoying it because it had a really nice blues soundtrack to it. I wonder what my experience will be reading it!

A very high recommend to basically everyone. Christie is a legend for a reason.
