I read this because one of my favorite authors (Connie Willis) makes several references in her books to Agatha Christie. It was a quick, interesting book. I found it a little hard to get into at the beginning because there were so many characters that I could barely keep them straight but I forged on anyway figuring I'd catch up as needed. I was right; the book keeps you up to speed if you just press forward. It was a classic murder mystery type of book-which is always fun to throw in every now and again.
I’m gradually working my way through all the Poirots after a lifetime of watching the TV and film adaptations. I’ve enjoyed every version of Murder on the Orient Express I’ve seen and was slightly worried the book wouldn’t live up to my expectations. I should have remembered that it is almost a universal truism that the book is always better than the film and this book is no exception. This is possibly the best Poirot I have yet read - Lord Edgware Dies and The Murder of Roger Ackroyd are the closest rivals so far.
With the book it is much easier to keep track of the many characters in this story than it ever is with the films, and also the challenges in understanding the alibis and who provided them becomes easier to get your head around. I would definitely recommend this book to any Who Dunnit fans - it’s a classic story that everyone with an ongoing interest in the genre will know well and the original version deserves to be read.
