I should have in theory liked this but there was just a lack of draw for me. I liked the concept as a whole but the plot itself I found lacking. Also, are the raccoons evil or what?

The system of shadow blood capitalist condo magic is so fascinating that it saves my review. It’s a good book, but so grimdark that finishing it felt more of a chore than a good read. But it’s a book set in Toronto that pushes new boundaries so I don’t regret reading it.

The story went around in circles, teased at exciting themes and narratives but after 200 pages it barely came through enough to grasp me and keep me wanting to read.

The Marigold by Andrew F Sullivan is a genre-bending novel, oozing and seeping into horror, dystopia, and science fiction…but despite loving all three genres it is a book I found disappointing. Set in a future Toronto, the book explores the cost of doing business, family dynamics, a mysterious mold, and the lengths some will go to maintain power. Ultimately I just found this book confusing. Maybe it’s because I listened to the audiobook? There were a ton of characters and plot lines and I had trouble keeping it all straight. ⭐️⭐️

it's been a few weeks since i've read this one and i'm still trying to untangle how i feel about it. i think part of the reason why i like it is because i innately feel Seen by all the aspects it presents, as a person living in and having grown up in toronto - from the food delivery, to the staggering towers, to the inability to reconcile with the environment, to the generational developer families, to the unseen caretakers trying to clean up the Wet, to the pull of loneliness the Wet offers...... I'm not sure how to feel about the ending most of all, because i think it holds up a brilliant mirror of Toronto, but I don't know whether that truly is/will be our future.
