Célie Tremblay heeft altijd gedaan wat er van haar werd verwacht. Daarom is iedereen geschokt wanneer ze de tradities aan haar laars lapt en de eerste vrouwelijke Chasseur (jager) van Belterra wordt. Dit verrast ook haar verloofde Jean Luc, die kapitein van de Chasseurs is. Célie wilt kosten wat kost bewijzen dat ook zij de titel Chasseur waardig is.
Als Célie erachter komt dat er een reeks vreemde moorden is gepleegd waarbij de slachtoffers geen druppel bloed meer in hun lichaam hebben, besluit ze om dit tot de bodem uit te zoeken. Een magisch wezen moet hier achter zitten en Célie zal niet rusten tot ze erachter komt wie dit heeft gedaan. Dit leidt haar naar de schuilplaats van vampiers. Ze probeert de koning van de vampiers op afstand te houden, maar hoe meer ze hem leert kennen hoe moeilijker dit wordt…
De bloedrode sluier speelt zich af in dezelfde wereld als Heks & Jager. Je kan dit boek lezen zonder de trilogie te hebben gelezen, maar je krijgt wel een paar spoilers.
De bloedrode sluier gaat over Célie Tremblay die wilt bewijzen dat ze net zoals de mannen een goede chasseur kan zijn. Wanneer ze erachter komt dat haar verloofde Jean Luc een reeks moorden voor haar verborgen heeft gehouden voelt ze zich bedrogen door hem. Ze gaat dit mysterie tot de bodem uitzoeken en komt terecht op een eiland vol vampieren. De koning van de vampieren ontwikkeld al gauw interesse in haar. Célie snapt niet waarom. Zo bijzonder is ze toch niet? Of speelt er toch iets anders?
Het boek begon iets traag voor mijn gevoel doordat Célie in het begin nogal hulpeloos overkomt, maar gedurende het verhaal ontwikkeld ze zich als iemand die achter haar eigen keuzes staat. Ik vond het verfrissend hoe ik de bijpersonages in het begin totaal niet mocht, maar aan het einde van het boek was ik een beetje gehecht aan hen geraakt. Als morally grey personages jouw ding zijn, is dit boek misschien wel iets voor jou. De bloedrode sluier van Shelby Mahurin is een heerlijke mix van fantasy, mysterie en actie. Voeg vampieren, geesten, heksen en een slowburn romance toe en je krijgt een boek dat je haast niet kan wegleggen.

This was a cute book! It wasn’t the best written book ever, but I enjoyed the premise and reading it. I like the whole concept around the vampire island and the magic power. I don’t think you need to read the previous series in order to enjoy this book. I will say that the main character can be annoying and her finance is so sexist, but that gets dealt with relatively quickly. If you want a dark romance without too much spice, I recommend this one.

Célie had a rough time during the Serpent and Dove trilogy, and things are about to get worse. The Scarlett Veil captured my attention from page one with Shelby’s writing and the rich world she’s created.
You don’t need to read Serpent and Dove to understand this, though I highly recommend it because it’s such a good trilogy. There are casual mentions of what happened to Célie in the previous trilogy without boring readers who already know. It makes for a nice reminder.
A whole new threat descends over the city, and Célie is thrust into the middle of it when unsavoury characters start paying her more attention than she’d like.
What I liked…
Everything, but specifically Célie has a personal goal from the start, to prove herself more than a spoiled rich girl.
Not knowing who to trust always goes down well in a fantastical murder mystery.
I love the twists and turns, and this is only book one.
Vampiric shenanigans.
Romantic angst.
A journey of self-discovery.
What I didn’t like…
It ended and now I have to wait for the next book.

Absolutely fantastic and one of my favourites of 2023, and I read it in December.

okay yes this took me executing long to finish BUT this still deserves 5 stars it’s just SO long and the middle is very slow but i think celie and micheal’s dynamic was the tru definition of slow burn it almost hurt it was so slow HA i loved them so much and the ending ??? GAGGED me it was just like twilight when bella becomes and vampire and it gave me chills even tho i never finished the serpent and dove series it didn’t take away from this at all i still hated jean luc and celie DOGGED him out and im here for it he sucked so bad lol
