What the actual F was that? I had no idea what is going on. I felt like the characters technically didn’t face any issues, they always found how to resolve something within couple of minutes. I hated the book, however, I was curious how more stupid this can get

"You're doing it again."
"Doing what?"
"Romanticising nightmares."
Oh my gods, The Scarlet Veil was everything I didn’t know I needed in a dark, vampire romance! If you loved Serpent & Dove, then buckle up because Célie’s story takes the intensity to a whole new level. Six months after becoming the first female Chasseur, she’s got the weight of Belterra on her shoulders, and honestly, her journey in this book? Chef's kiss 😘 character growth.
Célie is fierce, determined, and so much more than the girl we met in the original series. Watching her come into her own as a warrior, while still dealing with the trauma and shadows of her past, was such a ride. Her evolution is beautifully done. And don’t even get me started on her dynamic with Michal. Their chemistry? Off the charts! Michal just gets her in ways that Jean Luc never could, and that whole dark, broody vampire vibe he’s giving? Yes, please. Their banter is on point, and Michal has this deliciously dangerous energy, but there's also this softness beneath the surface that just works for him.
Speaking of Jean Luc, I didn’t even feel bad for him by the end. He’s so patronising and condescending toward Célie throughout, and honestly, he set himself up for that downfall. Célie deserves so much more than someone who constantly underestimates her. Her final speech to him? Iconic. Like, she’s not playing anymore, and I was living.👏 For. 👏 It. 👏
The romance was dark, forbidden, and had me on edge the whole time. Célie struggling with her attraction to Michal while also knowing he’s a dangerous vampire was peak tension. You can just feel how conflicted she is, but it’s so worth it. And the quotes? Absolute gold. “Romanticizing nightmares” and “I think I might enjoy it” had me screaming.
The plot, with the rising evil and bodies piling up, was perfectly paced. There’s enough mystery to keep you hooked, but it’s Célie’s emotional journey and the tension with Michal that truly stole the show for me. Plus, the way Mahurin wove in themes of self-worth, identity, and choosing your own path? So powerful. The magic, the danger, the politics—it all just blends together perfectly.
I will say, if you're into slow-burn, forbidden love with a side of darkness, this is it. Mahurin knows how to craft a world full of tension and romance, and The Scarlet Veil is no exception. It’s haunting, thrilling, and full of those moments that will stick with you long after you’ve closed the book. Easily one of my favourite reads of the year and I cannot wait to read The Shadow Bride next spring!

"He gazes back at me carefully, warily, as if I'm splintered glass, one touch away from shattering. And perhaps I am. I can no longer count the spider-web cracks in my surface, can no longer know which crack will break me. Perhaps it will be this one."
"How can you possibly know if this is the last-" I close my eyes as my mind finally catches up. When I speak again, my voice is quiet. Defeated. "Did you send him to me?" He does not answer and his silence damns us both.
"You don't need to wield a sword to protect the innocent, Célie. You've proven that more than anyone."
Time has proven us all liars.
"Do you want us to leave? You know what they say about...six being a crowd?"
"Nonsense, seven is a crowd, not six. You speak rather definitively on the subject, Beauregard. Would you like to share with the class?"
"And all three have been known to cure a soul ache."
A soul ache.
"That," I say ruefully, "is a lovely phrase."
"You can't live for one moment Célie... You did a great thing for Belterra. An admirable thing. But you're more than great and admirable. You're more than that moment. Don't let it define you and don't let it dictate your future."
"Not every choice is a forever one."
"Th-There's a b-b-body back there." I jerk towards the cemetery gate. "A corpse-"
Slowly, he slants his head to examine the cobblestone path behind me. His voice is scathing. "Several, I imagine."
"And in that moment - as I descend into the bowels of his ship - I realise Hell is empty, and the Devil is here."
"You're doing it again."
"Doing what?"
"Romanticising nightmares."
"I should lose this battle to win the war."
"No one ever tells you how hard it'll be to blaze a trail, how lonely it is."
"You are not my friend, Michal Vasiliev."
"No?"
"No. That you would even think of friendship while you plan to maim and murder my loved ones proves you are quite incapable of it."
"Every relationship has problems."
"I think I'm going to kill you."
"I think I might enjoy it."
"Easy."
"Why?"
"Because I've been imagining how you taste since I met you."
"For a fortnight, the entire kingdom has been searching for you - fearing the worst, dreading what we might find - and where have you been? Entertaining the locals."
"I'm not local, Captain, and how fortunate that is for you."
"I will not break. I will not shatter."
"Perhaps the Célie you knew never existed. Have you ever considered that? It can happen without us realising - we fall in love with an idea instead of a person. We give each other pieces of ourselves but never the whole thing, and without the whole thing, how can we ever truly know a person?"
"I'm sorry, Jean, but I don't need you to protect me. I never needed you to protect me. I need you to love me, to trust me, to comfort me, and to push me. I needed you to confide in me when you had a poor day and laugh with me when I had a good one. I needed you to wait for me to catch those Lutins in Farmer Marc's field, just as I needed you to break the rules and kiss me when the chaperone looked away. I needed you to seek my counsel when you found the first body, even if you couldn't ask for my help. I needed you to value my insight. I needed you to tease me and prod me and stroke my hair when I cried; I needed a hundred different things from you, Jean Luc, but your protection was never one of them. And now...now I don't need anything from you at all. I've learned to survive on my own."
