Definitely read the Serpent & Dove series before this! If you don't, this will make less sense (eventually, things are explained but not immediately), and this also has spoilers for the Serpent & Dove. So if you plan to read Serpent & Dove later, like me, you already know how it ends and what happens. That never prevents me from reading a book because there's always more to a book than the ending, but it does bum me out since this came across as a stand-alone.
That being said, this ending is a BUMMER, and if you don't like massive cliffhangers, wait for the next to come out. The next book doesn't even have a release date yet (as of 10/2023), so take that as you will.

A bit ridiculous at times and the ending was very frustrating but overall an enjoyable, easy read.
I really don’t understand why this is intended as a separate series to her previous series. I haven’t read serpent &dove and didn’t think it would be necessary as obviously it wouldn’t be marketed as separate but there was SO much context and a whole cast of characters that followed on directly from the previous series that it just left me really confused.
Also the language isn’t great but easy to absorb. I skimmed a lot of it - sometimes it felt like she was using words too complex for her purpose which I often find particularly annoying but i could get through it.
Sometimes the writing felt torn between wanting to be a young adult book (bordering on tween) and an adult novel. For example, they go to a magical brothel and theres multiple chapters talking about sex and swearing but then theres a talking cat and ghosts are drawing moustaches on portraits. Sometimes it would try and make sometimes scary and the tone wouldn’t fit at all and “scary” moments would become funny or just weird.

"You’re doing it again,” he says at last. I look away quickly. “Doing what?” “Romanticizing nightmares."
⚰️ Mini Review ⚰️
Ok in all honesty I saw this book and just read vampires and it was by @shelbymaurinauthor so I said BUY. Well I didn't realize it was a Serpent and Dove spin off!!! I'm so happy we got to see the S&D characters so early in the book. I absolutely LOVED this one. I want to read it all over again. The only thing I hate is that ending! Why? Why must authors torture us with cliffhangers? I need the next one NOW. It was so beautiful. That's saying a lot considering I didn't really care for Célie in the S&D books. She wasn't bad but just not my fav character, but this book changed that and I understand her better. I do feel bad for Jean Luc though. Ugh I just want more more more!
