This is so much more complex and interesting of a book than I thought it would be. I sort of assumed it was going to be a snarky social experiment, but it’s a deep reflection on the violence and subjugation of women and the social and cultural impacts of that with stunningly beautiful writing.

Rebecca Solnit is one of my deities. I dog ear so many pages in her books. I have to admit I liked The Mother of All Questions better than this one, between the two I recommend that one more. I was a little lost in the Virginia Woolf essay, and more than once I found myself wishing for an updated essay or two (this was published in 2014, and as an example the Me Too movement erupted since then and would fit into this narrative.)  Still a valuable read if a little dated in 2022. A collection of thought-provoking, varied essays. First I've read of Rebecca Solnit's work but will now be exploring some of her other books.
