I wasn't prepared for how much I'd love Rebecca Solnit's writing. Immediately picking up more essays by her.

Like any essay collection, there were some I know I'll reread and recommend multiple times and others that weren't in a subject where I have the most interest. But they are all excellent.

Some of these essays felt fleshed out and insightful, standouts for me were Grandmother Spider, Woolf's Darkness and Worlds Collide in a Luxury Suite. Men Explain Things to Me, the titular essay, felt simplistic and underdeveloped even for it's age and having brought this phenomenon to the forefront of the political and feminist conversation. The Longest War was a series of entirely-too-graphic statistics on SA and DV rather than an essay.

While the collection has some gems, it is not enough of a fundamental text to ignore the flaws of the discussion. Pick up a more nuanced and contemporary collection on similar topics of feminism and that will serve you much better than this does on that.

felt that this book was definitely a good intro into feminist literature
i was compelled to put sticky notes and underline several passages in the book and solnit seemed to draw broad connections that i had never considered
that being said, i do think that the book could be FAR more intersectional and also seeming strayed from the point of the book occasionally
overall, well-written and a good jumping point!
