This is so much more complex and interesting of a book than I thought it would be. I sort of assumed it was going to be a snarky social experiment, but it’s a deep reflection on the violence and subjugation of women and the social and cultural impacts of that with stunningly beautiful writing.

Some of these essays felt fleshed out and insightful, standouts for me were Grandmother Spider, Woolf's Darkness and Worlds Collide in a Luxury Suite. Men Explain Things to Me, the titular essay, felt simplistic and underdeveloped even for it's age and having brought this phenomenon to the forefront of the political and feminist conversation. The Longest War was a series of entirely-too-graphic statistics on SA and DV rather than an essay.

While the collection has some gems, it is not enough of a fundamental text to ignore the flaws of the discussion. Pick up a more nuanced and contemporary collection on similar topics of feminism and that will serve you much better than this does on that.

God this book dragged.  There's also some islamaphobic comments I can't ignore.  I think in general I need to remove a lot of these outdated works from my tbr.  A lot of what's being said has been said better by others in my opinion.  Sometimes the essays didn't even seem to have much of a coherent thought or point.  Also major trigger warning in the first essay.  It felt like the author was relying on shock value.

Thoughtful and thought-provoking. Several of the essays illuminated ever more clearly how misogyny continues to feed many of today’s news stories, from America’s horrific gun culture to the despicable coverage of the Depp-Heard trial. Some references are a bit outdated or should be reconsidered in light of new evidence/understanding, however.
