Saving Rachel by John Locke

Saving Rachel isn't the type of book I generally read. So I have to look at this book for what it is, not what i am used to reading.

It was entertaining for sure, almost like watching an action movie. There was a plot twist almost every chapter, and the author really made a point of leaving you on the edge of your seat. And I went through it quickly. (also helps that it was less than 200 pages written at a basic level, and double spaced.)

But it certainly wasn't life changing. Didn't cause any self reflection or moments of inspiration.

People have said that they didn't like the characters, didn't fall in love with them. But that's actually something i enjoyed about this book. I didn't love the characters either, but that's because they were assholes not poorly created characters. I liked that there wasn't the typical good guy bad guy. Because in the real world there isn't, there's just people and everyone has a reason or justification for why they do what they do.

Would I recommend this book? Yeah. It was entertaining and a nice afternoon in the sun read.

Does it rank my top 50 books even? Probably not. It was entertaining but overall i am already starting to forget some of the plot. The impact is surface level.

I was actually going to give this three stars for most of the book as I couldn't get into the prose style wiring he switched to. then he does it again, where the hell did that come from!

I'm furious about how much I enjoyed this??

Was it good... Absolutely not in no way was this a good book, honestly this is the kind of book you couldn't pay me to read HOWEVER I simultaneously read this with my best friend, shout out Key❤️, and the enjoyment of reading a bad book with Key is incalculably more valuable to me than money so obviously when they found it on Reddit I was all in.

Went in completely blind or maybe looking in the wrong direction, we didn't read the first two, we thought that Don was a detective!!

We absolutely guessed almost every twist ahead of time but that didn't make it less enjoyable, something something journey not destination something, every twist had us delighted.

Dialogue is clearly Locke's strongest suit because I found myself laughing more often than not, particularly the end banter with Lou and Don.

Every bad thing that happened to Sam had us cheering. Very strongly Team Rachel and
SpoilerTeam Callie.

I also liked Donovan a lot, he clearly should have gone into theatre holy shit, he'd say wild things like
Spoiler"so I moved into their attic"
like it's the... Natural thing to do??

But alas as much as I enjoyed this rollercoaster the unnecessary use of ableist slurs, the deeply rooted uh -maleness- of the story and unnecessary fatphobic attitude were all speed bumps I couldn't get over.

I might still read more of the books though because they're very fun, bad but fun.

Side note, roughly 150 pages, drinking game suggested by Key, take a shot every time someone says Karen Vogel, you'll be dead.

Also why has Goodreads been stopping me from writing this review for like eight hours??

Weird and wholly unbelievable - thank goodness I think it was a 99c book.

This was the most awful novel ever. I bought it because it was 99 cents on Amazon, and I was up for a change of pace. I hated the main character - why make your protagonist so vile? I was rooting for the bad guys. It was predictable and precisely the sort of thing I imagine comes from someone who wakes up one day and thinks, "I bet I could write a book. How hard could it be?"

I got a super-cheap edition for my kobo for a long flight and it was perfect for that. Utterly disposable but briefly absorbing.

This book was a fast read. Such twists and turns. Not anything like the other Donovan Creed novels but a good segway between book 2 and book 4.

To be fair, I am not familiar with John Locke not was I aware this is some sort of series. Regardless, this book was awful. Everything from the characters to the writing to the plot was completely ludicrous and not at all believable. The only good thing was the villain's badass name - Donovan Creed.

I wouldn't recommend this book to my worst enemy.
