When I saw the title of this collection, I knew I had to read it. For anyone who knows me, it's very "me."
All of the stories were great (in terms of plot/character development/quality of prose), but four that particularly stood out to me were:
- Near-Extinct Birds of the Central Cordillera
- Bouki and the Cocaine
- Brief Encounters with Che Guevara
- Fantasy for Eleven Fingers
Also, either Ben Fountain has traveled to all of these places (Haiti, Colombia, Myanmar, Sierra Leone, to name a few) or he has a real talent for evoking a lush and vivid sense of place (possibly both).

I read about 50% of the book and decided not to finish it. The stories I read have some worthy ideas, and they begin in compelling ways, but the ending on them was unsatisfying. The writing was nice, but I felt the stories went nowhere plotwise.
