Both the premise of this book and the author being Steven Rowley, drew me to reading this book. A group of friends decide to gather together to give each other a living funeral, to show their love and appreciation for each other whilst they are still around to hear it.  Their friendships span three decades, this book shows us a remarkable portrayal of enduring bonds. As the 28th anniversary of their friendship approaches, we are reintroduced to the unforgettable characters: Jordans, the joyful couple whose love radiates; Craig, the initially irksome but eventually endearing friend; Naomi, who navigates the depths of grief after losing her parents tragically; and Marielle, grappling with the aftermath of a painful divorce. Together, they gather once more in the serene backdrop of Big Sur, continuing their tradition of commemorating the life of their college friend Alec, whose untimely death at the age of 22 left an everlasting impact on them all.  I loved the 90's nostalgia and the poignant heartfelt moments along with the fun moments in this book. Its one of those books that will leave you smiling.  #stevenrowley #thecelebrants #goodreads #thestorygraph #getlitsy #tea_sipping_bookworm #bookqueen #bookstagram #ggputnamssons

DID NOT FINISH: 13%

Made it 40 pages and I had no clue what was going on. Too many characters and I couldn’t follow. Not worth wasting my time on

Great concept, but the character development was weak and plot lines often unbelievable. I still enjoyed listening to this and liked the ending.

A cute-ish concept albeit a little corny and cliche in its execution, but it’s biggest flaw was how insufferable and unreasonable the characters were. I barely made it a third through before I was rolling my eyes at almost every part of dialogue.

I really wanted to love it like The Guncle but it fell flat.

I really really felt strongly that this was written by a man. And with a lot of telling rather than showing. Felt treacle-y. Very one dimensional characters.

General theme is pretty sad but very funny and well written.

Interesting concept that made me think. I appreciated the idea of getting together and celebrating your friends while they're still around.
