I had higher hopes for this novel. It was a solid read, but I didn’t really like the characters. I didn’t find them to be likable. I know they made a pact when they were in college but other than invoking the pact they didn’t seem to be involved in each other’s lives much. Why would the pact continue to mean that much but you don’t keep in touch regularly? I think that was a huge plot hole. I also expected it to be funnier but didn’t actually laugh at anything until I was 60% through the story. It didn’t wow me, but it was a good enough book.

Audiobook

DNF

I had no interest in the characters. After listening for a few hours I thought, “Why am I still listening?!”
I really enjoyed most of his other novels, so I gave this one a real chance before giving up.

Couldn’t get into the story, characters weren’t lovable to me.

Somehow this book is simultaneously character-driven because there are like 5 short plots rather than one over-arching plot…AND YET I still found all of the characters pretty flat, uninteresting, and unlikeable. Like does Jordy have any character traits other than being tall and good at swimming?

I wanted to love this book because 1) I’ve read two of the author’s other books and adored them, and 2) I loved the story idea. Found family, deep friendships, explorations of death — these are topics I love in a book! But I just found that I never cared about the characters or their relationships to one another. I didn’t feel the magic that brought them together as friends. I couldn’t buy-in. Bummer!
