This book was fine; I was entertained but frequently frustrated with the main character. Don’t read this if you’re interested in more of the dynamics of nyc media landscape and Blackness. It’s more so a commentary on the motivations and reward of leaving your hometown for the pursuit of “success” and the consequences of making that your entire personality. And what happens/how you feel when you find yourself right back where you started. Not a must read, but also not a waste of time!

The plot wasn't that exciting, but I related a lot to the protagonist's struggle: being out of work, being super depressed, and questioning what you're even trying to do with your life.
Graphic: Ableism, Infidelity, Mental illness, Racism, and Sexual content
Moderate: Bullying, Cursing, Grief, Gaslighting, and Abandonment
Minor: Racial slurs and Religious bigotry

This book found me at the exact right time. Denton-Hurst does a fantastic job of distilling particular emotions and questions into her characters' lives: How do you reconstruct yourself, after the world has flattened you completely? Destroyed your dreams? How can you show up for others when you've lost your sense of self? And, after you've let down the people you love, how do you start again?
I loved Mickey and the other characters, and I felt completely seen by their humor, their frustrations, and the way they show up in the world. Mickey was imperfect, which, for me, only made her more alive, and I appreciated how this book took its time to show the beats of her emotional journey and way back to herself.
"Homebodies" will stay with me for a long time. I can't wait for Denton-Hurst's next.
