This was a very solid Spider-Man story! Brian Michael Bendis is the master of writing Spider-Man, although he did fall flat on a few things.

Firstly, the good was very good. There was a lot more drama than action, which I definitely prefer. For the most part, the characters feel very feel and rooted in reality and I loved most of their interactions. It was also just very funny, which is always good with Spider-Man.

The bad consists of a few things. The villains didn’t make sense. At the end of the day, nothing came of anything the villains did. It’s as if Bendis shoehorned them it at the last minute because the comic executives said there needed to be a villain, when in reality this was a very Miles-centered story. There were also a few things that just weren’t explained. What’s a venom blast? I understand that there were arcs before this one, but this is a Volume 1, a soft reboot. Weird powers should be explained for people who are just tuning in. And as a small nit-pick, the word-choices and grammar were off. For some reason Bendis seems to hate contractions and love colons. It gets annoying. And finally, I’ve heard a few people complain that Bendis is a white man writing a black character and focuses significant portions of the story to his race. There were a few moments that stood out as odd, but I’m definitely not the person to analyze that aspect. But it is a problem nonetheless.

Overall, it was a pretty good graphic novel! Solid start to a promising series.
