Oh my god, shut up, Clary. Oh my god, the Clary and Simon relationship makes me so mad, but not as mad as the continued incest. Oh my god, everyone sucks. Truly, the only moderately tolerable character in this book is Max. Actually, that’s a lie, Cassie just somehow made her two main protagonists the most infuriating characters of all time. Clary is a bad friend, a bad daughter, and kind of a misogynist lmao. Jace is just annoying. The supporting characters have my support - mainly because they aren’t IN LOVE WITH THEIR SIBLINGS.
Look, I know they aren’t actually siblings, but they don’t know that and still want to run away and be together or whatever.
Anyway, I digress. This book efficiently and effectively introduced the Herondales; I have to commend Cassie for that. It also plays to my found family-loving heart.

The one thing this series does well is found family (and adoptive family), I stand by the Alec and Jace duo being so wonderful, and it’s nice to see Clary try not to be such a bitch to Isabelle. The banter and general bickering are actually quite entertaining sometimes, even if it’s so so unrealistic.

Also, vampire Simon is such a slay, Daylighter supremacy, tbh. Absolutely obsessed with Jace saving Simon’s life as well.

It was fine, not sure if I found the love triangle cliche more bearable because I made it through the first book so I was used it it, or if it was actually written better.
though the incest aspect is still very creepy and icky. I actually assume something will happen later that proves Cleary and Jace are not actually siblings

City of Ashes:
3.25/5

- yk i could really do without the whole
making clary and jace kiss while they still believe they're siblings
but yk thanks bc i definitely needed that in my head. that was so gross i was actually disgusted. it wasn't that they kissed, it was that they kissed while they
sTILL BELIEVE THEY ARE SIBLINGS

- idk if Cassy Clare meant to make The Inquisitor an EXTREMELY unlikeable character, but if she did, she did a damn good job of it. i
celebrated when she died

- valentine is also an extremely well written villain. i like his charm but at the same time it's what makes me despise him
- i personally liked City of Bones more but this was still nice :)
- i liked the action and the humor that we established in the first book

What a ride! Rereading this is so much fun, having the details come back to me and seeing the foreshadowing and little hints

I feel like this book is where the story really gets going. CoB is so much set up: introducing the world, the characters, the villain, the conflict, etc. So much happens in so little actual book-time, and we only get Clary’s POV (except one little Jace passage)

In this book though we’re diving into the action and the relationships and the POV’s and the ~drama~

It’s probably actually like a 4-4.5 for me but it was just so goddamn fun that I’m sticking with 5
