Clever at times, always entertaining.

This is a good time-killer novel. I'm not really sure I see the satire in it. It seems it would be better to just say this is a light comedy novel that pokes a bit of fun at high fantasy worlds in general.

I do not regret reading this, as I said, it is a good time-killer, or maybe pallet cleanser.

I recommend this book to anyone that feels like reading, but doesn't want anything too serious.

Disenchanted is an absurdist fairytale fantasy, an obscure genre dominated by Terry Pratchett and exemplified by his Discworld series. It is an unfair but unavoidable comparison. Pratchett succeeds by his utter commitment to the wordplay, meta-awareness, and pacing to keep you consistently awash in his folly. Robert Kroese in comparison seems tentative. Scenes and character descriptions start off embedded with playful silliness then wind down into more standard fairytale telling. It makes the puns feel clunky and discordant.

Structurally we start with an interweaving of two stories, the first of a brazen Prince Boric, heir to the throne of Dis and his scheme for succession. The second story tells the adventures of the recently deceased King Boric, twenty years after his younger storyline. In the interweaving it is not always immediately obvious which Boric we are watching, but the interplay does work to provide introductions and foreshadowing. Around the time King Boric gets lost in the woods I feared the story was lost with him, and begin to wonder if we were going to successfully tie in the narrative threads and hopefully reveal a lesson, which is a necessary component of the fairytale genre. Happily Disenchanted abandons the absurdity, finds its feet and delivers an appropriate and satisfying fairytale ending.

Decent book. Starts pretty funny and interesting but it loses steam in the back third.

Disenchanted is an entertaining romp through the fictional world of Dis. Dealing primarily with Boric, the novel begins with him being dead, then fills in the gaps of how he ended up in that non-living state. Along the way the groundwork for him solving his undeadedness is placed, and the novel works toward a satisfying, if somewhat surprisingly saccharine conclusion.

All in all, it was an easy, enjoyable read, but I'm not sure there is enough to bring me back again for another read.

I may rate this lower, if I had read the book. Also, if I expected a lot more. What I expected was brain candy. That's what this is. With a good a to Monty Python, and the many great fantasy works. The audiobook was incredibly well done, and I think that's why I found it more entertaining than expected.
