This book was...interesting. I didn't hate it. I just didn't enjoy it. It was a struggle to read each day. It never sucked me in and I just didn't feel connected to the characters. I didn't really like any of them. It just wasn't for me.

This was really a disappointment for me. It started off really icky and while the ick was kind of reduced, it never really got better plot-wise. Both of the protagonists were just shells - there was no development other than them being selfish and shallow. If they'd just taken a couple minutes to think about anyone other than themselves, things might have worked out better for them.

This is the first book I've read set in the Virgin Islands. In fact, I didn't know anything about them. While not a complete history of the islands, It was interesting to learn about the rivalry between the various islands and with Puerto Rico. I had issues with the characters and with the story, but I finished because I wanted to know more about the people, and the culture.

I would give this 3.5. I loved getting the history of the Virgin Islands but it felt a bit disjointed for me.

This book takes you to another time and place entirely. It's a celebration of strong women, if not in the traditional sense.

I really got into this story in the middle but I didn't care for the beginning or end. I found the father and daughter incest distasteful and unnecessary. The plot would have been fine without it and I thought it was described almost romantically and I don't like that literary treatment of what amounts to child rape.

The first half was absolutely, completely riveting. The second half drifted in too many directions and lost the thread a little bit for me.
