I was expecting a more analytical approach, given Caitlin's degree. This is more of a travel memoir spiced with facts about death beliefs, and the author's own opinions and takes on them. I enjoyed this format on her first book but for this one I felt bummed because it lended to poor interpretation of some of the rituals and their origins.
She's very respectful, and the humor was refreshing and enjoyable but definitely don't take this as a super academic source.

PS. (Just because I won't sleep otherwise) La Santa Muerte is NOT a feminist icon and/or LGTB+ icon in Mexico; trust me, I've lived here all my life.

A very interesting survey of practices of memorializing the dead in various cultures around the world.  I am a big fan of Caitlin Doughty already, this was an intriguing and thought provoking read about how we remember our dead, and practices of various cultures that help with the transition when someone dear to us dies.  It is helpful for re-evaluating the western mindset towards death and dying.

the idea of death in the western world, america especially, is a very daunting one. caitlin does an excellent job of showing that it doesn't need to be. while i personally wish she had gone into deeper detail (especially of the indonesian death rituals) it doesn't take away from the book that she didn't.

Loved this book. A beautiful respectful travelogue and exploration of cultures and ritual surrounding how we say goodbye to our dead and dispose of bodies. Fascinating and thoughtful. Love Caitlin Doughty
