This is excellent. I think just about anyone could find this book both incredibly interesting and incredibly helpful.

On its face, From Here to Eternity is a thorough examination of a multitude of death practices found around the globe, and it succeeds in that in beautiful detail. But even more so, this is a thoughtful study on the grieving process. As Caitlin Doughty illustrates the stark realities of death, the reader can sense her deep curiosity and compassion surrounding her trade. There was also a lot to this book that was surprisingly funny (because in the face of death, if we're not laughing were crying... So why not try for an even split.)

I feel it was a bad idea to read book that makes you think about death on the one year anniversary of the full scale war in my country 😬

But in general it rather entertaining and interesting. Great choice for a quick weekend reading.

I was expecting a more analytical approach, given Caitlin's degree. This is more of a travel memoir spiced with facts about death beliefs, and the author's own opinions and takes on them. I enjoyed this format on her first book but for this one I felt bummed because it lended to poor interpretation of some of the rituals and their origins.
She's very respectful, and the humor was refreshing and enjoyable but definitely don't take this as a super academic source.

PS. (Just because I won't sleep otherwise) La Santa Muerte is NOT a feminist icon and/or LGTB+ icon in Mexico; trust me, I've lived here all my life.

I found From Here to Eternity very enjoyable and informative! I listened to an audiobook version of this book recorded by the author herself, which I believe enhanced my reading experience. Throughout reading From Here to Eternity, I learned a lot about death practices and customs all over the world.

Doughty does it again, weaving humor and tragedy to craft a tapestry of death, acceptance and possibility for the future of our afterlives

Very interesting to learn about death rituals and practices in other cultures. I think the book is successful in making the reader stop and reflect upon current American practices surrounding death and grief. I don't think I enjoyed this book nearly as much as Smoke Gets in Your Eyes because this book is less personal, but that makes sense given that the first book is more memoir with bits of science and history added in, while From Here to Eternity is mainly focused on the cultural practices with very small bits of the author's personal perspective of witnessing and being a part of those practices.
