For a Star Wars spin off novel, this is as good as it gets! An endearing and loyal interpretation of the main characters facing a compelling new conflict. Zahn does a good job maintaining the movie characters’ high levels of competence while still making the villain seem like a threat—if anything, the main issue is that the villains seem overpowered.

When "Star Wars: Heir to the Empire" was first released, it filled the void left by an absentee Star Wars franchise. Now, in the age of Star Wars Bombardment, "Heir to the Empire" not only exists at "what was" for Star Wars fans, but as a "dream long remembered" where Luke was heroic, Han and Leia were together, and the war waged was not on an ambiguous moral battleground but between pure good and evil. While I enjoy the new string of Disney/Lucasfilm Star Wars, then there is a joyful, adventurous simplicity in "Heir to the Empire" that is absent from modern storytelling.
