I haven't read sci-fi in a while, but this book hooked me right away. It more than exceeded my expectations of the blurb.

The day before having to choose his team, Ty, the academy's star pupil, decides to log in some hours out in space. However, when there, he finds a survivor from a shipwreck from about 200 years ago. Because of this, he's late in choosing his team, and now he has misfits as team members, but things are not as bad as he though–at least at the beginning. The survivor he brought back, Aurora, has powers that an entity as old as time wants and Ty and his team members need to defeat the enemy before it destroys the universe.

I can't wait to start book 2.

Dang! This was a really interesting read. Like I said, I'm reading this for bookclub and trying to branch out from my comfort genre which is fantasy. And indeed, I'll say that some of the elements were a little too... space-y or weird for me I guess? And the characters weren't exactly people I'd died for, though they were all generally likeable. It's just that some of the elements to me felt a little cringey. Like they couldn't go two pages without mentioning romance or how hot they or someone else was. And speaking of characters, this is so random but I really want to know what Fin's comeback was for Kal's comment lool, we never knew and will probably never know. Very tragic. But as for the good parts of this book, the style was absolutely captivating. Especially a certain sequence with Cat toward the end. And the little Squad member descriptions were super fun and unexpected! I rarely found myself bored during this book. But anyway this was a lovely read all in all, I enjoyed it but... I guess I just didn't enjoy it ENOUGH for it to be a five-star read. Maybe next book in the series though!
