This book made me anxious in the best way. The setting was really interesting and I really liked the flashbacks interspersed. My only critiques are that the end felt a bit rushed and very cheesy, and the soliloquies weren’t my fave.

Pop culture girlies unite, this one is for you! I really enjoyed reading this book. It’s a smart commentary on how the media treated young women in the 2000’s and how their male colleagues sold them out for their own success. I was hooked and invested from the start. There are some fun twists along the way as well. While you mainly get Kat’s point of view you do get tidbits from the other costars. That on top of the dual timelines and media snippets really enhances the story. I appreciated the drama but I felt that the pacing was a little slow at times. I recommend this book for fans of Once More With Feeling by Elissa Sussman and Open Book by Jessica Simpson.

The Daydreams follows four stars from a famous show in the early aughts through two timelines: one as they navigate their quick rise to fame in unforgiving Hollywood, and one 13 years later as they reconcile where their lives have taken them following an unexpected halt to their momentum as a group. This was a super fun read and felt like being immersed in the time of Cosmo and Tiger Beat and gossip blogs and cropped tank tops and denim mini skirts all over again!

A sumptuous, nostalgic feast that balanced sunshine & satire in such a satisfying way.

I really enjoyed Hankin’s previous two books so I was thrilled to get a DRC of her latest.
I didn’t watch the kind of Disney channel shows and movies that inspired the fictional show in this novel, but since I also didn’t live under a rock (just a very pro-PBSs house without cable) I’m aware of the cultural phenomenon and fan base around them. Moreover, I’m aware of what being asked to maintain the patriarchal standards imposed by the network and its viewers does to many of the young female stars. This novel has a little bit of everything- teenage drama, a dash of mystery, reclaiming personal narratives, social commentary, and an unexpectedly hopeful ending.
I was in a reading slump before I decided to jump into this book and it just whisked me along.
