This was a book club assignment and it started to freak me out. I have medical anxiety and am currently going through some health issues and I’m not in a place for this one

Reading this book makes me wonder about our healthcare system. Susannah and her family had a lot of resources. Their drive and persistence allowed Susannah's condition to be successfully diagnosed and treated. There are many people in our country who don't have the resources or drive to get the help that Susannah did.

3.5!

For bookclub! Really really fast paced and interesting (and such a scary and outrageous story). But just also not the best memoir I've read

I felt part of the authors journey the whole time. Truly great writing about a very complex event.

I listed to the audio version on Overdrive. I didn't care for the narration, but the content was compelling enough that I didn't abandon (it's like a real-life House). The book lost me a little at the beginning of her recovery (I don't think that's a spoiler as SHE RESEARCHED AND WROTE A BOOK), but she brought me back in when she compared her story to those of other young women who experienced the same condition. Sure, she's probably a little pretentious, but she's also admittedly a hipster. There's self-awareness that comes with such examination of madness and sanity, I suppose.

One of the biggest takeaways: the importance of parity in healthcare and having people in your corner. Without her parents or boyfriend, what might have happened to her?

I went to college with Susannah and heard her terrifying story second-hand through mutual friends. Reading this book was interesting to me because I have been so curious about the details of her illness and I fully expected it to be a good read. I was blown away by how great her writing is; this was a beautifully written page-turner. Even despite knowing that the story ultimately has a happy ending, I was biting my nails throughout.

This book is a great memoir, and a fantastic piece of investigative reporting. Amazing to know that this book has changed lives.
