i'm fucking pissed off

This book is captivating and tense. Just enough darkness and just enough humanity. I'm cursing myself for reading it within 2 weeks of it's release because it might just kill me to wait for the next one. It's everything I want in a new series.

Well he’s definitely cruel…

I wanted to like this trilogy, however I am just not a fan of bully romances

This book had a slow start for me. I wanted to like it more than I did. Most of the action happened in the last few chapters but it did at least give me the motivation to continue the series.

The Cruel Prince is a book I’ve heard so much about but wanted to wait until there was more than one before I started reading. So often I pick up series that have just started and only have one book out, and then while waiting for the next I completely forget about what happened and never end up getting to the second one. So if it’s a series I’ve heard great things about and am really keen on reading, I try and wait for more than one to be out so I can keep my momentum. In this case, all three in the trilogy are already out so I have no excuse not to power through!

This one starts off rather brutally but we get straight into it when Jude and her two sisters witness their parents get murdered and are whisked off into Faerieland by the murderer. Jude and her twin find themselves as human girls living with the faeries and all the trials and tribulations that come with being weaker and disrespected.

“What could I become if I stopped worrying about death, about pain, about anything? If I stopped trying to belong? Instead of being afraid, I could become something to fear.”

This is one of the better faerie worlds and stories I have read. It’s pretty brutal and cut throat like all the best faerie stories in my opinion. This is not one that’s all wings and prettiness. People are assholes, people die and betray, just as I think it should be.

“Most of all, I hate you because I think of you. Often. It's disgusting, and I can't stop.”

Jude is tough, smart, wilful and conniving. Always getting in trouble, she pushes those around her to their limit and won’t back down even when she ought to. That’s how she finds herself working a spy for the heir apparent, while battling with the cruel prince, her worst enemy and school torturer. Jude helps uncover plots and secrets, becoming more entangled with the cruel prince and the royal family as she goes.

I wouldn’t say she really grows and changes with regards to her personality but she definitely becomes stronger and more determined. Basically, she starts off stubborn and she’s stubborn throughout!

“If I cannot be better than them, I will become so much worse.”

I didn’t mind Jude too much as a character but I had some major frustrations with her sister and some of the side characters though, many of them were annoying and got on my nerves with their behaviour. Her twin especially really got to me and was just spineless and infuriating. But on the other hand there were some weird and cool characters that pop up and I think we will get more of it as the series goes on.

“Before, I never knew how far I would go. Now I believe I have the answer. I will go as far as there is to go. I will go way too far.”

I did enjoy the story much better in the second half than the first, which is not particularly surprising at the beginning of these series is often a lot of world building and setting up of characters are motives. So once we started to get into it I started flying through it. The dramatic ending was the cherry on top and I think will set us up for a really interesting sequel that’s full of action and drama.

“He looks like a faerie lover stepped out of a ballad, the kind where no good comes to the girl who runs away with him.”

A good kick off to this trilogy and I’ll be diving into the next one soon.

It's 3'5 actually. I liked the story and the way it changes the more you read. And I really liked the protagonist A LOT. I think Jude has everything i want and like in a female protagonist but other characters were a little bit predictable for me. It also has some interesting twists but i have to admit the whole issue of politics and war strategies inside the court bored me a bit and that's why I don't give it 4 stars.
