“Sometimes the Shadow can overwhelm us. The power it offers… The temptation can be too strong to resist. If we yield to it, it’s almost impossible to return to the Light. Unless there’s someone willing to help us find our way back.”

I enjoyed this book and it left me wanting more, but it has its strengths and many weaknesses. One of which was the writing style. I noticed throughout the book that Alex often told us of her experiences rather than allowing us to explore the moment with her. The writing style prevented me from truly engaging with the story. Alex is 16 (17??) but she honestly talks like a 12 year old. Each time she encounters the antagonist her thoughts are incredibly fearful, but the words out of her mouth are sarcastic to the point of childishness. Yes, many snarky characters will often use humour as a means to shield their fear, yet the words out of her mouth do not reflect her emotions in the slightest. I believe it really says something when I can predict how Alex will act every time she encounters Aven, and it really takes the excitement from it. Imaging Harry Potter rolling his eyes at everything Voldemort said. No, that wouldn't happen because Voldemort wanted limitless power and killed his parents, mirroring Aven, whom Alex cannot seem to grasp that she is lucky one of her friends has not died from her stupid comments. Her parents are archaeologists, supposedly intelligent and highly respected scientists. Their enthusiasm paralleled that of Arthur Weasley's in his discovery of muggle devices. However, as archaeologists, it can be presumed that they'd be accustomed to the unknown, or making sense of it. No, no, no, her parents are dumbfoundrd by this magical world (which is understandable) however their actions mimic a 6 year old's. Kaiden (potential love interest) was severely underdeveloped, he made a brief appearance near the end of Akarnae, and in Raelia Alex is already smitten. To me, it felt like he was hastily thrown together in an attempt to slowly introduce love to Alex. I don't understand why Alex calls D.C. her best friend when she had been friends with Jordan and Bear for much longer. The fact that D.C. had originally been a horrible person doesn't just dissipate in an instant, you know?? She was super sweet to Jordan and Bear...when she was awful to them before??? And her love interest....did not make sense. There were no clues at all, and was introduced to the audience in a comment made about certain observations. But never before had she mentioned it in her thoughts? Plus, WHY DID SHE INTRODUCE KAIDEN LIKE ALEX AND JORDAN HAD SUCH A GOOD THING GOING SHE BUILT THEM UP IN AKARNAE AND HINTED AT BIGGER THINGS TO COME BUT SHE JUST IGNORED IT????? WHY WOULD YOU??? OMGGG I HATE THIS
So yeah, all in all, I'd recommend this to you if you were 12, someone who doesn't read many books or you're eager to read an exact copy of Harry Potter
(Jokes, regardless of what the brutally honest review I did like this book you should read it)
