I picked this up on the strength of catching a bit of an adaptation of an earlier story, repeated on the radio - Pamplemousse himself played by Gordon Kaye. It all sounded rather fun and jolly. And it is! But also rather dated in some ways. The French Farce aspects are a bit arch, but the camaraderie between Pamplemousse and Pommes Frites the bloodhound makes up for it. I can't help feeling that some extended discussions about food and a couple of other scenes turn a novella into a longer story, but the plot, if slightly obvious, does rattle along at speed and has a good if overly neat twist in the end.

In short, I'll probably go back to the beginning of the series - eventually.
