Very little else grips me like a book about addiction. While I loved the first two volumes of Ditlevsen's Copenhagen trilogy, neither of them quite held me captive like this one did. It feels very real, very possible, addiction – reading about it makes me feel almost as if I'm addicted myself.
It's the ups and downs in particular that Ditlevsen captures so well here, the way those can flip on a dime, the extremeness of the shifts. Solidly horrifying.
