Not the most interesting of books and at times highly confusing, but I always like to read about China, and this book wasn't particularly long. Wouldn't read again, though. Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, Sijie's debut novel, was much, much better.

I put it down for a month with 45 pages to go-- picked it up to finish and, shockingly, the last 45 pages were no better than the first 200+. Not for me, not for me. I found it absurd instead of funny, hard to follow, hard to be interested in, and just plain awful in places.
