This book is very good. Just be warned that it moves slowly for the first 2/3rds.
Also because I’m nit-picky, the commas (or lack there of) in this books drove me crazy. Let’s just please use commas correctly and consistently next time.

The amount of action scenes balance the slow lulls of the story, which I very much enjoyed. John Gwynne takes time to develop his characters and set the story and the world for the next book. I found the start of the book (and therefore the start of this saga) a bit confusing and didn’t fully understand the conflict of the story. It seems like this was done on purpose. There were a lot of characters to follow and remember, which added to the confusion, but Gwynne did a good job of reminding you who is who throughout the story. The end of the story wraps up with a bang and the author isn’t scared to kill off any of his characters - a good sign of a fantasy story. Will definitely read book 2.

A decently entertaining read but it does nothing new or special. It felt like one long prologue for what is (I hear) a much better written book. I may pick this series back up when my TBR lightens a bit, but for now I'm parking it
