Took a minute to get into it, and the names are shite, but when Storm entered the game, I was all in.

This book is so over-hyped. I see this series on every best epic fantasy series list with comparisons to all the big names. It was a massive disappointment. Malice was certainly a debut. The writing was very meh and at points I thought there was an issue with my book because the sentences ended in such weird places. The characters were boring and unoriginal. There was no time spend building them up. My biggest fantasy pet peeve is long-ass series with no character work. Jumping between 5+ POVs is fine, but only spending 6 pages on a character before switching leaves me invested in nobody. The characters also all got pulled into a young place because of Corban's POV.
Book-ending this  with fights between Corban and Rafe made a lot of sense though.

My biggest disappointment was the descriptions. Everywhere I see Gwynne descried as an expert on Vikings who loves cosplay. Where are the descriptions of swords and armor?? This book wasn't particularly original and the only things that really made this feel like Vikings was the names, annoying random word choices, and mythology knock offs. I'd also like to add that I cannot believe I did not care at all about the wolf puppy and
baby dragon
. That alone was an achievement.

All in all Malice was way too long, boring, and lacked heart. I understand it's a debut, so I'll write some issues off to that, but I hope this series picks up overtime.

Expansive and filled with characters that are spread across the world. Chapters alternate POV from the different cast of characters and you have to keep a spreadsheet to remember who the all are. But it's a first novel and I suspect it will only improve from here. Corban is a young man you root for. Love his sister as well and the warriors/trainers that help him along his way.
Tons of political intrigue and am curious to see where it will unfold in future books.
